George Peter came to Cornell in 1947 as an electronics technician and in 1960 was asked to help install the radio telescope in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, where he lived with his family for two years. He returned to Cornell to direct the Research and Development Laboratory of the National Astronomy and Ionosphere Center, which manages the telescope for the National Science Foundation.
